The early and mid-1960s saw a burst of
bricks-and-mortar activity on the Charles River
Campus. Most notable were construction of the
George Sherman Union, the Law and Education Tower,
and Mugar Memorial Library and the development of
West Campus. The University had acquired Braves
Field in 1953 and was now in a position to develop
the land into a sports and housing complex. This
1962 photo shows construction on Claflin and
Sleeper Halls and ground being cleared for Rich.
Named for the three founders of BU, the residences
house more than 1,600 students. In 1971 the Case
Center joined the trio. Boston University Photo
