It's not the Head of the Charles but a forgotten
springtime event called the Marine Salute and Water
Parade, formerly held in conjunction with
Commencement. Along with a view of some vintage
powerboats, this 1958 photograph gives us a
portrait of the Charles River Campus when the CAS
and STH towers flanking Marsh Chapel were the
tallest trees in the forest. The one-story
buildings to the left of Marsh housed the student
union from the mid-1940s to the mid-'60s. The
handsome Dutch-looking structures to the right were
the first buildings BU rented when the University
began to move from downtown Boston. They were razed
around 1960 when construction began on the School
of Law tower. Boston University
