BU Yesterday

It's not the Head of the Charles but a forgotten springtime event called the Marine Salute and Water Parade, formerly held in conjunction with Commencement. Along with a view of some vintage powerboats, this 1958 photograph gives us a portrait of the Charles River Campus when the CAS and STH towers flanking Marsh Chapel were the tallest trees in the forest. The one-story buildings to the left of Marsh housed the student union from the mid-1940s to the mid-'60s. The handsome Dutch-looking structures to the right were the first buildings BU rented when the University began to move from downtown Boston. They were razed around 1960 when construction began on the School of Law tower. Boston University Photo Services
