Obituary

Robert Leone, a School of Management professor and chairman of SMG's undergraduate program faculty, who had been a senior economist on the Council of Economic Advisors for Presidents Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan, died March 17 after a two-year battle with lung cancer. He was 53.

Robert A. Leone

"We lost a great teacher, a wonderfully creative mind, and a very dear friend," says Jeffrey Miller, SMG professor and associate dean of the school's academic programs. "He pulled the rabbit out of the hat for so long I thought it would just continue forever. He never gave in to the cancer. His death apparently resulted from complications from his recent surgery."

Leone, a professor of operations management, joined the BU faculty in 1988. He taught at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government from 1982 to 1988, and at Harvard Business School from 1973 to 1982. From 1971 to 1973 he taught at Yale University.

He taught Management as a System courses at SMG. He also worked with the economic and management consulting firm of Putnam, Hayes & Bartlett, and often presented keynote addresses to top executives of Fortune 100 companies. He authored more than 50 professional studies and books in economics and management.

Leone leaves his wife, Mary (Dowling); two daughters, Andrea and Elisa; his mother, Rachel; and a sister, Patricia LeBoeuf.

A scholarship fund has been set up in Leone's name. Contributions may be sent to Ruth Gallagher, Development Director, School of Management, 595 Commonwealth Ave., Boston MA 02215; e-mail rgallagh@bu.edu; 617-353-5618.
