Does this man have something against ice cream?
In the late 1950s and early 1960s a Howard
Johnson's stood in what is today the parking lot of
the BU Academy. Our sense is that the HoJo's was
closed either when construction of the
Massachusetts Turnpike forced the rerouting of
Commonwealth Avenue near the BU Bridge or when the
Howard Johnson Hotel was opened near Kenmore
Square. This picture of a workman demolishing the
restaurant was taken on December 27, 1963. BU
