The Boston University News was a student-run
weekly that lasted into the early years of the
Daily Free Press era. This photo of the News' Bay
State Road cityroom dates from 1962, a particularly
rich year in the paper's history. For one thing,
Nina Totenberg was on the staff (today she's NPR's
legal affairs correspondent). For another, the News
was named Best College Newspaper in New England
thanks to such stories as its exclusive interview
with Mrs. James Meredith, wife of the first black
student to enroll at the University of Mississippi.
Referring to a telegram to Meredith signed by more
than 1,200 members of the BU community, Mrs.
Meredith told the News, "Tell all the people at BU
I'll never forget this." Boston University Photo
