This year marks the 50th anniversary of the
dedication of the College of Liberal Arts building
on Commonwealth Avenue. The opening of the building
-- now the College of Arts and Sciences --
permitted classrooms, offices, and the CLA library
to move from the inadequate Copley Square
facilities to the Charles River Campus. Most of the
top floor of CLA was occupied by a brand-new
library, named for BU benefactors Dr. and Mrs.
William Chenery. The Chenery Library lasted less
than a generation; it was superseded by Mugar
Memorial Library in 1966, and its place at 725
Comm. Ave. taken by the CAS department of
astronomy. This photograph was taken January 25,
1961. BU Photo Services
