The University's symposium in honor of Elie
Wiesel's 70th birthday drew large and captivated
audiences to Metcalf Hall on October 25, 26, and
27. Some two dozen academics, religious leaders,
and literary figures -- including Aharon Appelfeld,
shown above with Wiesel -- spoke on the theme The
Claims of Memory. Appelfeld, one of Israel's
supremely gifted novelists, discussed the summer
after the end of World War II, when he began to
reclaim prewar memories he had buried within
himself. Appelfeld had escaped from a concentration
camp as a child, and while he was on the run, he
explained, hiding his Jewishness was so critical
