The 4,657 international students from 151
countries enrolled in the fall 1998 semester are an
omnipresent and valued component of life at Boston
University, a component that is tempting to take
for granted. International students were no less
valued in the 1950s, but they were few enough in
number (392 in 1954, for example) for their
presence to be something of a novelty, as this
September 1952 photograph suggests. We know only
that the two foreign students are posing with their
new textbooks at a forerunner of the BU bookstore.
The picture was probably used as a back-to-school
publicity shot. Boston University Photo
