Bridge to the past: When the BU Bridge
(originally called the Cottage Farm Bridge) opened
70 years ago, contemporary newspaper accounts
stated that it would form "one of the main links in
the main traffic artery between the North and South
Shores of Massachusetts." This photograph, from
1949, showing a pair of steam locomotives pulling a
string of boxcars toward Cambridge, reminds us that
the Boston & Albany Railroad bridge under the
BU Bridge was also an essential link in North
Shore-South Shore traffic. The partly obscured
Cadillac-Olds sign is on the roof of 808
Commonwealth Ave., now a BU building but still
known to many as the Fuller Building. Photo
