Slowdowns on the BU Bridge are nothing new, but
this 1937 tie-up on the bridge running underneath
the Bridge surely belongs in a category of its own.
Legendary Boston news photographer Leslie Jones
took the picture of a Boston & Albany
locomotive after it jumped the rails next to what
is now the Boston University Boathouse. The
railroad bridge is still there (with a single track
instead of the two in the photo), but the Boston
& Albany Railroad, once a division of the New
York Central system, was long ago absorbed by other
companies. To the left and right of the BU Bridge's
arch are two longtime automobile showrooms now
owned by the University: the Fuller Building at 808
Commonwealth Ave. and the School for the Arts.
Until 1949 the BU Bridge was called the Cottage
Farm Bridge. Photo courtesy of the Boston Public
