Irish Ayes

Some 700 friends of Ireland were on hand to celebrate the recent peace accord at the Irish Immigration Center's 1998 Annual Awards Dinner, where Elizabeth Shannon, director of BU's International Visitors Program, was among those honored.

Presenting the award to Shannon, University of Massachusetts President William Bulger (Hon.'96) cited her acknowledged leadership and unwavering efforts for peace over the past 20 years.

Shannon, journalist, teacher, and author, was married for 25 years to the late William V. Shannon and lived in Ireland for four years while her husband served as U.S. ambassador. She was cofounder of Ireland's Children, an organization that helped deprived children in Northern Ireland, and more recently cofounded Reaching Common Ground, a conference of American and Irish women. Her book I Am of Ireland has proven a powerful voice for the women of Northern Ireland.

Among the attendees were Chancellor John R. Silber and politicians Brian Donnelly (SED'69) and Bruce Morrison, both of whom received 1998 awards.

CEC's innovative training programs acclaimed

The Boston University Corporate Education Center has been named by Microsoft Corporation as one of three finalists for the Excellence in Authorized Technical Education Centers Training Award. The award honors Microsoft certified solution providers, independent firms that develop and implement software solutions using Microsoft products and technologies.

This year's three finalists were selected from more than 1,750 entries worldwide on the basis of their expertise in developing business solutions. The nomination recognizes the Center's innovative training programs, which resulted in the successful implementation of Microsoft BackOffice products.

Another award for CAS student

Paul A. Rubio (CAS'99) has been awarded a scholarship by the Morris K. Udall Scholarship and Excellence in National Environmental Policy Foundation. Rubio, of Plantation, Fla., was one of 75 students selected from a field of 370 entrants nominated by universities and colleges throughout the United States.

The scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic merit to students, like Rubio, pursuing careers in environmental public policy, or to Native American students specializing in health care or tribal public policy. The award covers the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board, up to a maximum of $5,000.

Rubio is the recipient of a Boston University Trustee Scholarship, a National Hispanic Scholarship, and a CAS Distinguished Sophomore Award.
