BU School of Medicine
faculty, staff, and students gathered together for
a special reception on January 13 to kick off
BUSM's yearlong 150th anniversary celebrations. The
sesquicentennial marks the founding of BUSM in 1873
and of its predecessor school, the New England
Female Medical College -- the first institution in
the United States to provide women with a medical
education -- in 1848. Preparing to cut the birthday
cake are (from left) Provost of the Medical Campus
and BUSM Dean Aram Chobanian, Deena Atieh (MED'00),
vice chair of the student committee on BUSM
affairs, and Don Grande (MED'73), president of the
BUSM Alumni Association.
