Bridge photos

The inauguration of the Boston University Bridge -- the other BU Bridge -- was marked with a formal ceremony and a parade on May 7, 1949. Built as the Cottage Farm Bridge in 1928, it was officially renamed after a group of undergrads at the Boston University News generated interest among the BU community and eventually with the state legislature. The bill to rename the bridge passed without a dissenting vote. In the small photograph we see BU President Daniel L. Marsh unveiling the commemorative plaque (long since stolen), along with state Senator John E. Powers, who sponsored the enabling legislation. The first trip over the BU Bridge was made by an official motorcade led -- according to the Boston Herald-Traveler -- "by these pretty Boston University coeds, flanked by BU ROTC marchers."

When the Cottage Farm Bridge was set to be opened in 1928, a local paper reported that it would form "one of the main links in the main traffic artery between the North and South Shores of Massachusetts. . . . Braves Field, the home of the Boston National Base Ball team, is but a short distance from the Boston Terminus."
