Diffusion and Perfusion-Weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Acute Human Cerebral Ischemia

Stroke is the third leading cause of death and leading cause of disability in the United States. Efforts to limit infarction in acute stroke patients might gain significantly from an accurate means of identifying hypoperfused yet viable brain tissue. Diffusion-weighted (DWI) and perfusion-weighted (PWI) magnetic resonance imaging have been shown to be more sensitive and specific indicators of tissue at risk at the acute stage than conventional CT or MR imaging techniques. The physical principles behind DWI and PWI will be reviewed along with examples of their clinical applications.
