Kenneth Freeman is president ad interim.<\/li>\n<li>We invited Associate Provost and Dean of Students Jason Campbell-Foster to attend.\u00a0 Jason Campbell-Foster is associate provost and dean of students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>When following this rule, arrange titles consistently in the text, either preceding or following the individual\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"editorial-sample\">\n<li>President Ad Interim Kenneth Freeman, University Provost Ad Interim Kenneth Lutchen, Trustee Emerita Terry Andreas, and Senior Vice President Gary Nicksa will attend.<\/li>\n<li>Attendees include Kenneth Freeman, president ad interim; Kenneth Lutchen, University provost ad interim; Terry Andreas, trustee emerita; and Gary Nicksa, senior vice president.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Lowercase all titles when used without the name of the titleholder:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"editorial-sample\">\n<li>Submit your request to the provost.<\/li>\n<li>The president will lead the procession.<\/li>\n<li>The dean of students approved the poster.<\/li>\n<li>The dean of the law school will attend.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Capitalize all named professorships:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"editorial-sample\">\n<li>Peter Paul Career Professor<\/li>\n<li>William Fairfield Warren Distinguished Professor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Do not capitalize such words as \u201cfellow\u201d or \u201cscholar\u201d or \u201caward winner\u201d when referring to recipients of awards:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"editorial-sample\">\n<li>Guggenheim fellow<\/li>\n<li>Fulbright scholar<\/li>\n<li>Pulitzer Prize winner<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>In running text, lowercase words like \u201cpresident,\u201d \u201cprofessor,\u201d \u201cdean,\u201d \u201cdirector,\u201d and so on when they follow a name:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"editorial-sample\">\n<li>Kenneth W. Freeman is the president ad interim of Boston University.<\/li>\n<li>Stan Sclaroff was selected as dean of Arts &amp; Sciences.<\/li>\n<li>Send your request to the director of the program.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Capitalize a title in display text, such as in a printed event program or when the title appears under a name (as in a letter\u2019s signature or on a list).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Write Emeritus, Emerita, Emeriti, and Emeritae in roman type and follow the rules of capitalization appropriate for the context. Place it at the end of the complete title without a comma or italics:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"editorial-sample\">\n<li>President Emeritus<\/li>\n<li>Professor Emerita<\/li>\n<li>Trustees Emeriti<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Treat names consistently in text and lists. If possible, avoid the use of social titles (Mr. or Mrs.) or honorifics (Hon.) with names. Thus, in a list of donors or in naming those who attended an event, avoid using Dr. or Mr. or Ms. inconsistently with only a few names.<\/p>\n<h3>Social Titles and Honorifics<\/h3>\n<p>Social titles such as Mr., Mrs., Ms., and Dr. should generally be omitted. When an academic degree follows a name, such titles are always omitted:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"editorial-sample\">\n<li>Jane Smith, MD, <em>not<\/em> Dr. Jane Smith, MD<\/li>\n<li>Robert Jones, PhD, <em>not<\/em> Dr. Robert Jones, PhD<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Use Reverend and Honorable with \u201cthe\u201d when titles are spelled out, but drop the \u201cthe\u201d if using the abbreviations Rev. and Hon.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"editorial-sample\">\n<li>Rev. John Smith; the Reverend John Smith<\/li>\n<li>Informally, Reverend Smith is acceptable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In writing faculty titles, place the name of the school or college first:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"editorial-sample\">\n<li>John Doe, a College of Arts &amp; Sciences professor of English (<em>not<\/em> John Doe, a professor of English in the College of Arts &amp; Sciences)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Arrange titles consistently in the text, either preceding or following the individual\u2019s name:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"editorial-sample\">\n<li>Arts &amp; Sciences Dean Stan Sclaroff, Assistant Professor Jeffrey Allen, Trustee Emerita Terry Andreas, and Senior Vice President Gary Nicksa will attend.<\/li>\n<li>Attendees included Stan Sclaroff, dean of Arts &amp; Sciences; Jeffrey Allen, assistant professor of information systems; Terry Andreas, trustee emerita; and Gary Nicksa, senior vice president.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The word \u201cfaculty\u201d can be used with either singular or plural verb agreement, depending on the intended meaning. When \u201cfaculty\u201d means the teaching staff as a collective whole, it takes a singular verb:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"editorial-sample\">\n<li>The University faculty is committed to excellence in teaching.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When \u201cfaculty\u201d is used to mean faculty members, it takes a plural verb:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"editorial-sample\">\n<li>CFA faculty led the seminar.
