Prof. Karen Allen and Grad Student, Katherine O’Toole, coauthor new PNAS Research Study

Professor of Chemistry and Chair of the Department, Karen Allen, along with graduate student, Katherine O’Toole, coauthored a new Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS) research study with Professor Barbara Imperiali from MIT.

The paper, “Glycoconjugate pathway connections revealed by sequence similarity network analysis of the monotopic phosphoglycosyl transferases,” revolves around a pathway that makes glycoconjugates and glycopolymers involved in critical and varied biological functions across domains of life. This paper not only highlights the diversity and significance of monoPGTs, but also categorizes over 38,000 different monoPGTs, compiling this information into the first database of its kind.
