Departmental guidelines are as follows:<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: left; font-size: 16pt; font-weight: 600;\">Responsibilities and Suggestions for Mentors<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Be available for assistance in a timely manner<\/li>\n<li>Provide constructive feedback<\/li>\n<li>Answer questions and provide advice related to:\n<ul>\n<li>time management and setting prioritie<\/li>\n<li>structure and culture of department<\/li>\n<li>management of laboratory personnel issues<\/li>\n<li>negotiating the grant review process at relevant agencies<\/li>\n<li>when\/how to appropriately contact journal editors to facilitate publication<\/li>\n<li>professional advancement<\/li>\n<li>expectations of the department and university to successfully achieve tenure; help in developing a course of action to achieve these goals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Provide support and feedback for teaching\n<ul>\n<li>Attend course lectures annually, and provide constructive pointers<\/li>\n<li>Write letter to department chair annually summarizing mentee\u2019s teaching<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Provide grant and manuscript advice (read manuscript and grant proposal drafts)<\/li>\n<li>Positively advance mentee\u2019s career\n<ul>\n<li>If possible, especially if in the same field, suggest\/arrange venues for speaking engagements (conferences, specific academic institutions)<\/li>\n<li>When appropriate, nominate for awards<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Annual meeting with mentee to evaluate progress<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: left; font-size: 16pt; font-weight: 600;\">Responsibilities and Suggestions for Mentees<\/h5>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Ask for help when it\u2019s needed<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t rely solely on your formal mentor (BU has lots of resources and helpful people with different expertise)<\/li>\n<li>Seek feedback on personnel management<\/li>\n<li>Prepare grant proposals with sufficient time to permit incorporation of constructive criticism from others<\/li>\n<li>Seize opportunities to establish positive contacts with significant players in your field, and with grant agency personnel and journal editors<\/li>\n<li>Take responsibility for career advancement and obtaining necessary feedback for understanding expectations<\/li>\n<li>Ask mentor to go to lunch once per semester<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>All junior faculty are paired with senior faculty mentors who can provide guidance and advice.
