BU Today published a video celebrating the 35th anniversary of BU’s Marine Semester. This year, a lot of Biology students participated in this program despite the challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Marine Semester has been offered every fall semester since 1985, and is open to both BU students and visiting students from other institutions. It provides hands-on laboratory and field experience for both undergraduate and graduate students. Unlike the typical college semester, students enroll in only one course per block (selected from among 4 different offerings)–each block is typically 18-20 days. This format gives students the time they need to concentrate exclusively on one subject and complete their own research projects. Courses take place on-campus in our Marine Research Teaching Lab and off-campus at field sites in New England and Belize.

This semester, to ensure the safety of students and faculties, the indoor laboratories were moved to rooms that have plenty of space for social distancing. While some of the outdoor fieldwork and courses remained the same, the field trip to Belize was canceled.
