What was \u201cat your service\u201d has been replaced by consumers expecting to have services \u201con-demand.\u201d The imagery of a butler in white gloves carrying a silver tray has been replaced by shouting across the room, \u201cHey Alexa,\u201d followed by a command in the fewest words possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our on-demand society wants goods and services to be delivered in a fast, frictionless manner, a frequently absent of face-to-face interaction. The transaction may come by way of a robot affectionately named \u201cWally\u201d or \u201cConnie\u201d at your door. And then, it\u2019s slam, bang, and without even a thank you, since technically speaking, it\u2019s nobody. In place of the butlers of bygone days, who were valued for their strength of mettle, these modern-day robotic counterparts, also steely and steadfast in their dedication to service, are made mostly of a substance of a different sort: metal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the hospitality world, we are \u201cconsumed\u201d with all forms deriving from the word, \u201cconsumer\u201d \u2013 subject, object, and (action) verb. It is our intense focus to anticipate, deliver, and ideally, exceed the guests\u2019 expectations. This special edition of Boston Hospitality Review on \u201cConsumer Behavior,\u201d edited by <span style=\"color: #cc0000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/bhr\/profile\/lydia-hanks\/\" style=\"color: #cc0000;\">Lydia Hanks, Ph.D.<\/a><\/span>,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Florida State University, and <span style=\"color: #cc0000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/bhr\/profile\/makarand-mody\/\" style=\"color: #cc0000;\">Makarand Mody, Ph.D.<\/a><\/span>, Boston University School of Hospitality Administration, illuminates the innovations and trends taking hold that were accelerated by the pandemic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The idea is not to frame the discussion as a tug-of-war between touch and tech.
