Sipe<\/span><\/a>, Associate Professor at the San Diego State L. Robert Payne School of Hospitality and Tourism Management,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows how hospitality leaders can increase their experience innovation efforts in their organizations by focusing on five key principles: unique and memorable aspects of the guest experience; emotional value above and beyond functional value; employee\/guest interaction and engagement; a systematic process of ideas to outputs; and leadership practices to influence organization-wide innovation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using Winston Churchill\u2019s leadership story as an example, <\/span><b><span style=\"color: #cc0000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/bhr\/2021\/04\/30\/from-war-to-recovery-a-lesson-from-churchill\/\" style=\"color: #cc0000;\">Chris Mumford<\/a><\/span>, Founder of Cervus Leadership Consulting,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> explains the importance of motivation and inspiration, adaptability, innovation, social responsibility, and wellbeing for a successful post-pandemic recovery for the hospitality industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Offering a technical perspective on performance management, <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/bhr\/2021\/04\/30\/leading-employee-performance-reviews-skillfully-and-with-care\/\"><span style=\"color: #cc0000;\">Ryan Giffen<\/span><\/a>, Assistant Professor of Hospitality Management at California State University, Long Beach, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suggests that leaders in the hospitality industry need to conduct employee performance reviews more skillfully.\u00a0 Here Giffen highlights the importance of regular feedback, recognition, acknowledgment, and rewards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To include a European perspective, we invited our overseas colleagues to give us their thoughts on what leaders need in the new era of hospitality.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 <\/span><b><span style=\"color: #cc0000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/bhr\/2021\/04\/30\/skills-for-leadership-in-the-new-era-of-hospitality\/\" style=\"color: #cc0000;\">Johanna Wagner<\/a><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #cc0000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/bhr\/2021\/04\/30\/skills-for-leadership-in-the-new-era-of-hospitality\/\" style=\"color: #cc0000;\">Carina Hopper<\/a><\/span>, Lecturers at ESSEC business school, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">name five leader roles that can drive sustainability in the hospitality industry going forward: purposeful self-explorers, status quo fighters, impact trackers, responsible pathfinders, and accountable solution designers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given the tragic state of our country when it comes to hate crimes and issues of racial injustice, we would be remiss if we did not include an article examining diversity and inclusion for hospitality leadership. <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/bhr\/2021\/04\/30\/inclusive-leadership-for-a-21st-century-hospitality-workplace\/\"><span style=\"color: #cc0000;\">Lindsey Lee<\/span><\/a>, Assistant Professor at Temple University\u2019s School of Sport, Tourism, and Hospitality Management, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/bhr\/2021\/04\/30\/inclusive-leadership-for-a-21st-century-hospitality-workplace\/\"><span style=\"color: #cc0000;\">Phillip Jolly<\/span><\/a> Professor at the School of Hospitality Management at Pennsylvania State University, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/bhr\/2021\/04\/30\/inclusive-leadership-for-a-21st-century-hospitality-workplace\/\"><span style=\"color: #cc0000;\">Heyao (Chandler) Yu<\/span><\/a>, Assistant Professor at the School of Hospitality Management at Pennsylvania State University, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">collaborated to explain how the practice of inclusive leadership and the development of inclusive organizational culture can enable the superior performance of diverse teams in the hospitality industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, we highlight an article by <\/span><b><span style=\"color: #cc0000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/bhr\/2021\/04\/30\/how-to-unlock-creative-solutions-through-first-principles-thinking\/\" style=\"color: #cc0000;\">Sloan Dean<\/a><\/span>, CEO and President of Remington Hotels, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on how he managed his group&#8217;s pandemic-period transition by applying first principles thinking and questioning \u201cbusiness as usual\u201d practices. He highlights the importance of empathy, and curiosity, and transparency in this process, and noted that humans can handle bad news better than they can handle surprises.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The unfortunate experience of living in a socially distanced world over the last year has illuminated for our guests and for our companies the deep importance of human interaction across all segments of our industry.\u00a0 And hospitality leaders in particular know the immense value of their employees when it comes to providing guest satisfaction and achieving business success.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without authentic human interaction, excellent hospitality service and memorable experiences are lackluster or do not exist.\u00a0 On this point, we recall a quote from the great Walt Disney, who said, \u201cYou can design and create and build the most wonderful place in the world.
