Identifying high risk infants at this early stage would allow for early intervention to begin much sooner than is currently possible, greatly increasing the potential for such treatments to have a lasting, positive impact on children and their families.\u00a0 To achieve these goals, we depend on area families who are willing to volunteer.\u00a0 Read on to learn how you can help.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #1a5139;\"><strong>Who can participate?\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Families who have a new baby who is diagnosed with Down syndrome<\/li>\n<li>Families who have a baby between the ages of 3 and 14 months and have an older child diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #1a5139;\"><strong>What does the study involve? <\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/autism\/files\/2010\/03\/ISPphoto.jpg\" alt=\"ISPphoto\" width=\"209\" height=\"200\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-991\" style=\"margin-right: 25px; margin-top: 5px;\" \/>This study involves four visits to Boston Children&#8217;s Hospital while your child is between the ages of 12 and 14 months. These visits are scheduled at your convenience during the day or on weekends.<\/p>\n<p>Visits to the lab include evaluations on your child\u2019s visual perception, motor skills, receptive and expressive language skills, and social communication. Starting at 18-months you will receive a report on the skills and behaviors that your child demonstrated during these assessments.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #1a5139;\"><strong>What will we recieve?<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Free parking<\/li>\n<li>Childcare for other siblings<\/li>\n<li>Monetary compensation for travel and participation<\/li>\n<li>A toy for each child<\/li>\n<li>Referral for infants and children to get a formal clinical evaluation through the Developmental Medicine Center at Boston Children\u2019s Hospital if concerns for Autism are identified during research<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #1a5139;\"><strong>Where does the study take place?\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>This project is in collaboration with the wonderful folks in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.childrenshospital.org\/research\/labs\/nelson-laboratory\">Dr. Nelson&#8217;s lab<\/a> at Boston Children&#8217;s Hospital.\u00a0All sessions are held at Boston Children&#8217;s Hospital in the Longwood Medical Area of Boston, MA.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #1a5139;\"><strong>Referrals<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Infants that exhibit &#8220;concern&#8221; on assessments will be referred for more extensive clinical evaluation through the Developmental Medicine Center at Boston Children&#8217;s Hospital.<\/p>\n<p><em>To add your child to the list of interested individuals for Infant Screening Project, you can email Linnea Joffe-Nelson at isp@childrens.harvard.edu or call 1-857-218-3005. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Learn more about this research <a href=\"http:\/\/www.childrenshospital.org\/research-and-innovation\/research\/labs\/laboratories-of-cognitive-neuroscience\/current-research-projects\/infant-studies\/infant-screening-project\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HERE<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This project is supported by the National Institutes of Health.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Infant Screening Project is a longitudinal study that aims to map early development and identify risk markers for autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and\/or communication difficulties.
