Our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/autism\/home\/research-team\/\" title=\"Our Research Team\">research team<\/a> included neuroscientists, psychologists, speech-language pathologists, and educators. We assessed\u00a0our participants\u00a0in the areas of language, reading and cognition. \u00a0Participants also completed\u00a0language activities. We aimed to\u00a0examine how a\u00a0child\u2019s brain responds using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI).\u00a0 The MRI machine utilizes a large magnet to record brain activity. During the MRI our participants played\u00a0games and watched a movie.<\/p>\n<p>This video from the <a href=\"http:\/\/gablab.mit.edu\/\">Gabrieli Lab at MIT<\/a> explains what to expect when participating in an MRI study:<br style=\"clear: both;\" \/><br style=\"clear: both;\" \/><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dUif3KDq8Tg?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" style= \"margin-right: 25px;\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h6><em style=\"font-size: 1.17em;\">Who\u00a0participated?\u00a0<\/em><\/h6>\n<p>Our participants were children and teens aged 5-17. This includes\u00a0boys and girls who are native speakers of\u00a0English and who\u00a0have a language based learning disorder,\u00a0have an autism spectrum disorder, or\u00a0are typically developing.<\/p>\n<h3><em><\/em><\/h3>\n<h5><em>What did participants do?<\/em><\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"\/autism\/files\/2014\/01\/Capture.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/autism\/files\/2014\/01\/Capture.png\" alt=\"Capture\" width=\"216\" height=\"130\" class=\"alignleft\" style= \"margin-right: 25px;\"\/><\/a>Our participants completed a battery of measures design to assess their language and cognitive abilities. It is our hope to advance scientific understanding of the typical and atypical development of language and reading using the data that we collected.
