It is one of the most stimulating intellectual enterprises in which an undergraduate can engage, demanding dedication and the ability to exercise independent judgment.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Plan Qualification<\/h3>\n<p>Students in either of the majors in the Astronomy department can apply to the program.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Application Deadline<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No later than the spring semester of the junior year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<hr>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Requirements<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><br \/>\nTo graduate <i>with Honors<\/i> in either of the majors in the Astronomy department, a student must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>author a well-written <strong>thesis<\/strong>,<\/li>\n<li>give a <strong>public presentation<\/strong> based on the thesis, and<\/li>\n<li>take an <strong>oral examination<\/strong> about the thesis with a committee of the Astronomy faculty<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, the student must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>regularly attend and participate in <strong>one of the following<\/strong> (for at least one semester):\n<ul>\n<li>the Space Physics Seminar Series<\/li>\n<li>the Astrophysics Seminar Series<\/li>\n<li>the Graduate Literature Seminar Series<\/li>\n<li>the Graduate Research Seminar Series<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>be registered for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/astronomy\/academics\/course-inventory#honors\">CAS AS 401 (Fall) and AS 402 (Spring)<\/a><\/strong>, both entitled \u201cHonors Work in Astronomy,&#8221; and receive a grade of B+ or better in <strong>both<\/strong> semesters<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Astronomy faculty committee will consider the quality of the written thesis, the quality of the presentation, the result of the oral examination, and the participation of the student in the seminar series to determine whether the student will be awarded Honors.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<hr>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">GPA Requirement and Evaluation Semesters<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Minimum grade point averages of 3.40 overall and also in the courses comprising one of the Astronomy Department\u2019s majors are required for students seeking to pursue Honors in Astronomy.<\/li>\n<li>This evaluation takes place after the Fall semester of the student\u2019s Junior year. In exceptional cases, evaluation may take place after the Spring semester of the Junior year, at the discretion of the Director of Undergraduate Studies, in consultation with the Department Chair.<\/li>\n<li>Students interested in the honors program should first ascertain that their GPA (overall and in the major) meets the standard listed above.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<hr>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Honors Project Faculty Advisor<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Honors projects are completed in consultation with an Astronomy faculty project advisor.<\/li>\n<li>The faculty advisor must be a full\u2010time CAS Astronomy faculty member and that faculty member must agree to serve as the student&#8217;s project advisor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<hr>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Honors Project Application Process and Proposal Submission<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><br \/>\nTo apply to do honors work, students should:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Complete the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/astronomy\/student-resources\/undergraduate#forms\"><strong>Application for Honors in Astronomy Form<\/strong><\/a>, in consultation with the faculty project advisor.<\/li>\n<li>Forward the blank Faculty Reference Form to the faculty project advisor, who should complete the form to evaluate the student\u2019s potential success in the project.\n<ul>\n<li>The faculty advisor should return this form to the student in a signed and sealed envelope.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Ensure the application form is signed by <strong>both<\/strong> the student and the faculty advisor before submitting.<\/li>\n<li>Submit the Application form and the Faculty Reference Form to the Director of Undergraduate Studies for initial approval.
