She specializes in gender\/sexuality, modern empires, and race. Her dissertation examines U.S. colonial law from the perspective of the Chinese in the Philippines. Her research has been supported by the Fulbright Program, the American Society for Legal History, and the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations.
