BUCSA is pleased to offer the Graduate Certificate in Asian Studies. Graduate students in any Boston University graduate or professional program can earn the certificate by fulfilling the following requirements while also fulfilling the requirements of their degree programs. The Graduate Certificate\u00a0<\/span>in most cases\u00a0<\/span>can<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>be completed without taking courses beyond the number required for the student\u2019s degree. The certificate will be awarded only upon completion of the degree program.<\/span><\/p>\n

Requirements of the Graduate Certificate Program:<\/h3>\n

1. Students must successfully complete at least 16 credits of coursework (4 standard courses) in courses primarily focused on Asia, with a minimum grade of B in each course.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0Concentration requirement: \u00a0At least three of the four courses must focus on a subregional\u00a0\u00a0(e.g. East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, Central Asia)\u00a0\u00a0or substantive (e.g.\u00a0comparative government, cultural\/archeological preservation, Buddhism) area.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0Courses must be chosen from at least two\u00a0different\u00a0departments or schools.<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0No more than 4 credits can be earned through directed study or research, except with written permission of the Director or Associate Director of BUCSA.<\/p>\n

5.\u00a0Students must complete a piece of significant Asia-related independent work such as an M.A. or M.F.A. thesis, doctoral dissertation, or two substantial research papers in graduate-level seminars.<\/p>\n

6. Students must demonstrate reading knowledge of an Asian language relevant to the course of study and regional focus. In alignment with the Pardee School’s language requirement, BUCSA uses a standardized reading test through LTI<\/a><\/strong> and a score of intermediate-mid for category I or II languages and intermediate-low for category III or IV. Native Asian language speakers who submitted an approved English language proficiency test score as part of their application are not required to take the test.<\/p>\n

7.\u00a0Students are very strongly encouraged to consult with the Director or\u00a0Associate\u00a0Director of BUCSA\u00a0at the beginning of their studies<\/em>\u00a0in order to ensure that their planned courses will fulfill the goals of the certificate program. At the very latest, however, students must inform the Pardee School\u2019s Manager of Graduate Affairs of their intention to earn the Graduate Certificate in Asian Studies by the same deadline as their Intent to Graduate Forms are due (i.e., late Sept. for January graduation, late January for May graduation, and late May for September graduation).\u00a0As they near completion of the Certificate requirements, they should schedule a meeting with the BUCSA Director or Associate Director to confirm that all requirements have been met.\u00a0Following approval of completion by the\u00a0Director or Associate Director of BUCSA and the student\u2019s departmental faculty advisor, the certification form\u00a0is submitted by the\u00a0Pardee School\u2019s Manager of Graduate Affairs to GRS in late April for processing before Commencement.<\/p>\n
