They provide a broad interdisciplinary and comparative perspective, to deepen understanding of how Asian people, nations, states, regions, and diasporas have developed, functioned, and interacted, and how they view the world and themselves. The major is designed to be flexible, easily tailored to each student\u2019s interests and learning goals, whether those focus on a certain country in the region or on particular transnational issues such as cultural flows, security, or economic development. Asian Studies majors are well prepared for graduate study and for careers in government, local and international non-governmental organizations, and the private sector.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/cas\/programs\/asian-studies\/minor-in-asian-studies\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>minor in Asian Studies<\/strong><\/span><\/a> is designed to be flexible and easily tailored to each student\u2019s interest and learning goals, whether these interests center on a certain country in the region or on particular transnational issues such as cultural flows, security, or economic development. Asian Studies minors secure a strong foundation for further study of or work in government, local and international non-governmental organization, and the private sector in Asia. The\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/academics\/undergraduate\/international-relations\/regional\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Asia regional track<\/b><\/a><span>\u00a0prepares students to better understand the international relations and domestic political and economic conditions of this important region. \u00a0Asia track courses are focused primarily on Northeast Asia (China, Japan, the Koreas, and Taiwan), but also include offerings on Southeast Asia and the Indian Subcontinent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #515151;\">Chinese and Japanese Houses<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In order to foster language learning on campus, undergraduate students are able to apply to live in themed houses that serve to encourage\u00a0academic and personal growth by connecting students with shared interests. Two brownstones on Bay State Road host our student <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/today\/2011\/greek-myths-italian-scrabble-and-green-dinners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">language-learning communities<\/a> in Chinese and Japanese:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li><strong>Chinese House<\/strong>, 172 Bay State Road: 13 residents and one Resident Assistant<\/li>\n<li><strong>Japanese House<\/strong>, 206 Bay State Road: 23 students and one Resident Assistant<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/asian\/academics\/undergraduate\/major\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b><\/b><\/a>The houses are not conceived as cultural houses, but as language-learning communities. Students must be majors or minors or, at a minimum, enrolled in MLCL language courses. Native speakers are welcome if they are also taking MLCL classes.
