Job: Director of Music Ministry

 

The Director of Music Ministry leads and develops the music of Allin Church fostering a vibrant, inclusive, and spiritually enriching worship experience.

This role blends traditional and contemporary musical expressions, supports congregational participation, and nurtures musical talent within the church community. The Director of Music Ministry works collaboratively with the Pastor and other ministry partners to plan and deliver cohesive worship services.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBLITIES

• Plan, coordinate, and lead music for all worship services, including Sunday services and seasonal or special services such as Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Easter, and Christmas Eve.
• Direct the choir and other musical ensembles, including scheduling and leading regular rehearsals.
• Select music that aligns with the weekly message, liturgical calendar, and the church’s theological and cultural context.
• Provide piano and/or organ accompaniment for worship services; additional instrumental ability is welcomed.
• Recruit, train, mentor, and positively engage volunteer musicians and vocalists.
• Identify and coordinate vocal and instrumental musicians for the summer music program.
• Collaborate closely with the Pastor and responsible ministries to plan worship services and ensure musical elements support the overall message and flow.
• Maintain and organize the church’s music library, including documenting weekly music selections and ensuring accessibility for the Pastor and Worship Committee.
• Procure music, manage copyright permissions, and ensure compliance with all licensing requirements.
• Consult on the music ministry budget, request purchases, and stay within approved financial guidelines.
• Oversee the tuning, maintenance, and replacement of musical instruments (2 Baby Grand’s and 1912 E.M. Skinner Organ) and recommend new equipment as needed.
• Play for weddings, funerals, and other special services, or arrange for qualified substitutes when unavailable.
• Participate in music-related activities with the church’s children’s program (e.g. Cherub Choir, etc.)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Strong musical proficiency in piano and/or organ; ability to play additional instruments preferred.
• At least three years of experience directing choirs and ensembles, with the ability to lead diverse musical styles including traditional, contemporary, and gospel.
• Bachelor’s degree in Music or related field preferred.
• Strong organizational, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to collaborate effectively, communicate respectfully, and foster a positive, cooperative environment.
• Ideate, plan, and execute additional musical performances / events targeting community outreach to help engage new musicians and church seekers (e.g. Advent Lessons & Carols, Artist in Residence, Spring Concert, etc.)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Advanced degree in Music or related field preferred
• Commitment to Christian faith and the mission and vision of Allin Congregational Church.
• Three – five years of experience directing choirs and ensembles, with the ability to lead diverse musical styles including traditional, contemporary, and gospel.
• Ability to utilize multimedia, recording, collaboration, and sanctuary technology to enhance worship and provide guidance where needed to help improve sound quality in our sanctuary and help train others on music related technology (if needed).

WORK SCHEDULE AND ACCOUNTABILITY

• Part-time position (15 – 20 hours per week).
• Salary range: $28,000–$40,000 annually based on experience.
• 4 weeks of vacation
• Reports to the Pastor, works in cooperation with the Music Ministry and church staff
• Communicate regularly with Pastor and church staff on work schedule and office hours
• Key working relationships include the Pastor, Music Ministry, Diaconate Committee Tech Committee, Children’s Ministry Director, Choir, and various Music Accompanists.
