Job: Director of Exhibitions and Registration

The Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts is looking for a Director of Exhibitions and Registration.

ABOUT ORGANIZATION

The Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts, a dynamic contemporary art center located within Harvard University’s Art Film and Visual Studies department, seeks a Director of Exhibitions and Registration. Reporting to and working in close collaboration with the John R. and Barbara Robinson Family Director, this position plays a key leadership role within the Carpenter Center in the areas of exhibition management, museum registration, and administration. The Director of Exhibitions and Registration works within a collaborative small team environment to help guide an exciting program of contemporary art exhibitions.

ABOUT POSITION

Exhibition Management:

– Provides leadership and project management in the development and implementation of the overall museum exhibition program including managing exhibition project teams, project schedules, and budgets

– Working alongside the Director, plans, implements, and directs exhibition and artwork commission projects, including logistics, staffing, and financial resources, and evaluations and reviews exhibition project plans throughout their lifecycle

– Leads negotiations and collaborations with external stakeholders including artists, galleries, partner museums, and vendors to help realize co-organized exhibitions and artwork commission projects

Museum Registration:

– Manages all museum exhibition registration activities, including artwork loans, contracts, fine arts insurance, risk management, and fine art shipping

– Drafts, negotiates, and administrates contracts with artists, lenders, partner museums, contractors, and vendors

– Prepares and completes documentation to support museum exhibition activities including condition reports, packing notes, receipts, certificates of insurance, checklists, etc.

– In close collaboration with the Preparator, implements and directs all exhibition changeover and artwork installation activates including gallery preparations, construction, and artwork nstallation/deinstallation

– In close collaboration with Univeristy facilities and operations staff, oversees all gallery operations and facilities required to support the exhibition program including security, climate control, and ensures the facilities meet museums standards of practice

Administration:

– Works closely with Carpenter Center Director on long-range planning for exhibitions and institutional strategic initiatives

– Acts as a thought partner with the Director related to general institutional leadership and special projects/initiatives

– Identifies, assigns, and allocates resources to meet project and institutional goals

– Develops, manages, and forecasts institutional budgets, identify funding needs and the determine the allocation of funds across projects

– Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates permanent and temporary staff and, with the Carpenter Center Director, provides overall leadership, guidance, and mentorship to all staff within the department

– Participate in regular meetings within the department and with external partners and represents the institution in meetings with University and external partners

– Partners with colleagues across the University, including within the Art Film and Visual Studies department

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree required; 7+ years of museum exhibition management and/or exhibition registration experience; supervisory experience required; experience preparing and managing budgets required; experience working with living artists required

Additional Qualifications and Skills

– MA or certificate in museum studies or arts administration preferred

– Advanced exhibition project management experience including managing project teams, schedules, budgets, installations, and logistics

– Advanced knowledge of contemporary art exhibition and installation methods

– Authority on best practices in museum policies and standards including registration, exhibition and display standards, fine art packing and shipping, insurance, art handling, condition reporting

– Experience drafting and negotiating contracts

– Experience with contemporary art commissions

– Experience managing and negotiating with vendors and contractors

– Motivating, generous, transparent leader who can work well in a team environment, providing leadership, direction and guidance

– Ability to hire, train, and supervise employees including organizing, prioritizing and scheduling work assignments

– Highly organized and extremely detailed-oriented professional who is able to manage complex and competing priorities

– Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically and to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community

– Ability to be proactive, use independent judgment and initiative, and work well under pressure

– Diplomatic and skilled negotiator

– Flexible and creative problem solver

– Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Cloud, and ability to learn new computer applications

– Provide the base of understanding and knowledge needed for working in an art institution.
