The 19th century Bildungsroman or coming of age novel experienced an afterlife in 20th century film. In this talk Professor Brown will discuss her research into the literary resonances of the award-winning film by director John Schlesinger, Midnight Cowboy (1969). Adapted from a novel by James Leo Herlihy, the film resonates with the concerns of the 19th century Bildungsroman.
