    I’m a woman, and I’m not white, and the idea that my race or gender would stop me from connecting with the great canonical works is honestly offensive. Universities should not be in the business of encouraging such a self-centered view of literature. My (decidedly not white!) parents raised me on Shakespeare, Kipling, Roald Dahl, and a variety of other famous White European authors— and I’m all the better for it. Great literature is about fundamental human experiences and emotions and those transcend any “identity” a reader may have. Or am I to believe that my Gen Z White male peers read Julius Caesar and go, “Gosh! I really can relate to these Roman politicians who lived 2000 years ago, on account of us all being dudes?”
