The Coolidge Corner Theatre’s Science on Screen series gives viewers the unique opportunity to hear how real-life science applies to classic films. This month, catch a screening of 1997 sci-fi dinosaur thriller The Lost World: Jurassic Park. The second-highest grossing film of 1997 (behind only Titanic), the movie brings back Jeff Goldblum’s eccentric Ian Malcolm and his team. They travel to InGen’s second island to investigate the dinosaurs there, but conflict is inevitable when another team arrives. The film, which also stars Oscar winner Julianne Moore (CFA’83) and Sir Richard Attenborough, made larger use of CGI and was praised for the quality of its special effects.

Science on Screen films are introduced by local experts in science, medicine, and technology, who connect current scientific research or technological advances to the movie’s content. Before the film, paleontologist Barnas Monteith will discuss the biochemistry behind the films, specifically how the events could become reality, and his time with his former coworker Jack Horner, the inspiration behind the Jurassic Park books. Monteith leads the Massachusetts State Science & Engineering Fair, Inc. (the oldest inquiry-based science education nonprofit in the state) and has spent almost a decade embarking on paleontology expeditions. He has had an incredible career, working at Harvard University’s Museum of Comparative Zoology and being one of the youngest to give the Plenary lecture at the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology.

The Lost World: Jurassic Park will be screened outdoors at sunset on 35 mm film. It’s bound to be a fun, educational experience in an urban oasis, the Rose Kennedy Greenway. Plus, it’s free!
