There is 1 comment on Award-Winning Author Tracy Kidder’s Rough Sleepers Focuses on BU’s Jim O’Connell

  1. Having read the majority of his work, there is little doubt in my mind that Tracy Kidder is among the preeminent nonfiction writers working today. His narrative style is unmatched. His latest book, Rough Sleepers, is a prime example of his craft.

Rough Sleepers is the story of one man, Jim O’Connell, and his devotion to the well being of Boston’s homeless population. Dr. O’Connell, with whom I have been personally acquainted for several years, is a self-effacing, and loving man who has devoted his life’s work to caring for and giving dignity to the invisible underclass of American society, in the mold of Mother Teresa.

In the process, Kidder gives the reader a glimpse of how despite mental illness and self-medication, this country’s homeless are human beings with feelings, intelligence, and inherent self-worth.
