  1. Exploring the Charles is a wonderful opportunity for BU students. I’m writing because the BU community has a much closer and less expensive way to take out a boat on the Charles than heading upriver to Paddle Boston: The BU Sailing Pavilion. There, Outdoor Programs rents kayaks ($18), stand-up paddleboards ($12), and sailboats ($24). Our helpful and knowledgeable student staff fits everyone for a PFD, explains important safety information, and helps you get into the boat for a short, medium, or long outing along the Charles! Check the FitRec website for up to date operating hours.

We also offer Learn to Sail classes during the season (usually April-October) and sunset kayak tours (Friday evenings). In addition to activities on the Charles, FitTreks Outdoor Programs offers outdoor recreation trips all over the region: hiking and camping in Vermont, backpacking in New Hampshire, rock climbing in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, as well as activities such as bike tours and apple picking in and around Boston. Our program started in 2019 and is growing each semester. I’d be happy to talk to you more about how FitTreks Outdoor Programs provides recreational, academic, non-academic, and employment opportunities to the BU community. Please see our website or feel free to reach out to me, Ben Beck, the Manager of Outdoor Programs at BU.
