There is 1 comment on Forced to Evacuate Ukraine, Nicole Jepeal (CAS’11) Worries about Those Left Behind

  1. I am disturbed by the – in my opinion – poor writing and/or editing in this article. It detracted from what ought to have been a very moving story. The first – again in my opinion – error was the use of the word “unique’ to describe the Ukrainian qualities of sense of humor and acts of defiance. Perhaps they are quintessential traits of Ukrainians but certainly not unique. This was a quotation of the reporter and so might not be an example of poor writing – perhaps poor editing. Misplace pronouns interrupted the stream of reading. This is one example: “ On Monday, Jepeal had to leave one such dwelling and was planning to move in with friends. But they had to suddenly take in their cousins’ two teenage children from Ukraine” Perhaps not exactly incorrect, but it wasn’t immediately clear who “they” were. Writing is important – good writing is essential.
