There are 3 comments on Two MBTA Green Line Trolleys Crash on Comm Ave; 23 Injured

  1. When will the MBTA be held accountable for the terrible job they do for this city? Even the newest green line trains have issues and delays. They can’t even keep their passengers safe, let alone get them to their destinations on time.

    1. The train drivers must have their mobile phones confiscated at the beginning of their starting times and submit to sobriety testing. If the driver is elderly, they must submit to frequent cognitive testing. If the driver is reputed to be an aggressive driver, they must be informed on the potential danger to passengers. If they’re recidivists, remove them from their driving responsibilities.

These are no-brainer actions the MBTA union likely oppose; however, public safety is the highest priority and if obstruction is the union strategy, fire the union leadership.

  2. This is one of the best write-ups I’ve seen on this accident which I just learned of today. On the “steam” railroads (the Green Line is an “electric” RR) this new technology has flaws and there has already been at least one collision (on the BNSF) because of it. A huge problem is it can’t deal with trains which go about reversing direction frequently and the work around requires to be very attentive to what’s happening. On the Green and other subway lines 150 million is a huge amount of money to be spending; I remember previous signal improvements that didn’t live up to their hype. OK, as to facts in this story you are the first article to make clear where it was–very close to Babcock St; other stories made it seem it was in front of BU which makes it seem like at Marsh Chapel! Another news report stated the train was running uphill at 30mph at St. Paul St. which is a neat trick! I gotta go–but thanks for the most thorough report but stop hyping Positive Train Control which has forced spending of several billion on a deeply flawed system. The T has spent over 100 million on commuter rail PTC and I am currently watching the installation of the fourth signal system on the Lowell Line in 14 years!
