There are 2 comments on BU Grants Optional Tenure Review Extension Because of Pandemic’s Disruptions

  1. I applaud BU for taking this action. It not only will alleviate undue stress on faculty, but will hopefully trickle down to alleviating pressure on the faculty’s graduate students who produce the data for their tenure package. However, I must ask, what is BU going to do for the graduate students? Will we have to make up for lost time due to COVID-19 in order to graduate before our funding runs out? Will graduation requirements be lessened by our faculty committee to account for this turmoil? You graduated the MED class early in order to help fight on the front lines, but what about us scientists who develop vaccines and therapies? Will we be left to work more than our usual 12-16 hr days to satisfy our faculty adviser and committee members? Nothing has been communicated to us from BU. The undergraduates, faculty, and staff get clear communication with regards to matters that effect them. But where do we fall? Between the cracks. Please rectify your attitude towards the members of the university that do the heavy lifting.

    1. I also applaud BU’s move to extend the faculty tenure review deadline. And I agree with A BU Grad Student that BU should offer similar extensions to their graduate students. Those grad students and workers who are involved in teaching have invested much time moving their courses online, and have assisted faculty in the transition, guided undergraduates through new course expectations, on top of teaching themselves how to teach remotely. In addition to using time for teaching that would have otherwise been used for research and writing, many have had research delays or cancellations. I hope the closing sentiment of this article can also be directed to graduate students and workers and also come with a similar extension to degree completion of a year.
