  1. “As scientists, we make a conscious decision not to enter into this political discussion.” Well, that’s the first self-deception. I applaud the effort Dr Apfelbaum clearly makes to avoid confirmation bias, and the discovery of the disparate impacts of corporate diversity messaging is important, the whole phrasing he chose is already politicized: “diversity,” “inclusion,” “traditional.” Is a traditional focus associated with bigotry and exclusion? Is merit-based promotion intrinsically hostile to diversity? Or is diversity in the employees in a business intended to outweigh the ability of employees to perform their jobs.

    In discussing the law firm study, he doesn’t wrestle with the question of whether “40%” of any group is legitimately a “minority.” 40% participation by women means that these firms are already at 80% of proportional representation. 5% participation by blacks and Latinos, which are 30% of US population, means these firms are only at 17% towards fully proportional representation. So I guess “diversity” doesn’t just mean “anyone but white males,” which has always been clear, it really means “females.” As usual, everyone’s stumbling over themselves to get more and more female representation while ignoring the terrible lack of presence of blacks.
