    Rich Barlow is a senior writer at BU Today and Bostonia magazine. Perhaps the only native of Trenton, N.J., who will volunteer his birthplace without police interrogation, he graduated from Dartmouth College, spent 20 years as a small-town newspaper reporter, and is a former Boston Globe religion columnist, book reviewer, and occasional op-ed contributor.   1. While appreciating the creative aspects of this applied art, the first thing that came to mind when I saw the picture was fire safety. Stairwells of this type are required to be devoid of flammable materials, and should not present sharp edges, protrusions, or other impediments to evacuation when vision is impaired by smoke or failed lighting. Considering what happened in COM last week, this should very much be on everyone’s mind.

    1. You’re absolutely correct. As somebody involved in the process, I know that there were several discussions with BU’s safety department and that material and shape regulations were followed. And that they ultimately signed-off on the work. All of the artwork was created with safety in mind.

  2. What a wonderful idea! Most stairwells across campus could use some sprucing up, and it encourages people to take the stairs (when able) too.
