In the video above, the Terrier varsity basketball team, led by new head coach Pat Chambers, practices for the first time this season.
Game on.
The season’s opening tap doesn’t come until mid-November, but tough practices have already begun. That part’s familiar to the veteran talent on the Boston University men’s basketball team — but in one major way, everything’s different:
First-year head coach Patrick Chambers is looking to transform the Terriers this season. As former associate head coach of Villanova’s formidable NCAA program, he comes from a tradition of attacking, pressure defense, and up-tempo, fast-break offense. Early indications are that more than ever, BU will now play that style.
Chambers inherits an experienced team, with nine returning seniors. That nucleus finished a solid 17-13 last year despite key injuries to starters Carlos Strong (MET’10) and Tyler Morris (SMG’10), both back and healthy. Expectations run high.
“Everybody wants to talk about going to the tournament and winning the championship,” Chambers says. “Let’s not focus on that— let’s just focus on getting better.”
Chambers isn’t making grand promises, but neither is he daunted. “If we can stick together and get through some tough times and the chemistry stays there,” he says, “we’ve got a chance to do something special this year.”
The Terriers open the season in New Rochelle, N.Y., against Iona, on November 13, and play their first home game at Agganis Arena against George Washington on Tuesday, November 17. Check out their full schedule here.
