A People’s History Moves to the Small Screen
Howard Zinn’s award-winning books are brought to life in a new film
Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States has sold more than a million copies and has been translated into several languages since it was published in 1980.
Now, along with Zinn’s Voices of a People’s History, it is the basis of a new film, The People Speak, produced by Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, Chris Moore, Anthony Arnove, and playwright and antiwar activist Zinn, a BU professor emeritus of political science. The film, which gives voice to those who promoted social change but often are unheard in American history textbooks, premieres on the History Channel on December 13.
On Thursday, November 5, Zinn, Moore, and actor David Strathairn will appear at the Tsai Performance Center as part of The People Speak College Tour, which is bringing the film’s producers and cast members to eight universities across the country. The evening will feature readings, clips of the film, and an in-depth discussion. The event is free, but seats must be reserved in advance.
The People Speak Live @ Boston University takes place on Thursday, November 5, at 7 p.m. at the Tsai Performance Center, 685 Commonwealth Ave. Doors open at 6:30. The event is free and open to the BU community, but space is limited. Reservations can be made here.
