WBUR seeks volunteers for on-air fundraiser

A chance to meet radio hosts and reporters — and tour studios

Volunteer Paul Cantor (from left) joins WBUR broadcaster Mary Ann Nichols and Mark Conlon, the station's administrative coordinator for underwriting, during a past on-air fundraiser.

WBUR-FM is opening its doors and putting out the welcome mat in October, inviting listeners to volunteer for its next on-air fundraiser— and at the same time get a behind-the-scenes look at the station and its personalities.

The award-winning, BU-owned National Public Radio station needs people to answer phones and take pledges weekday mornings from October 18 to 28.

“Volunteering is a great way for listeners to meet other listeners, hosts, and reporters and to see our studios and production facilities,” says Jonathan Peck, WBUR’s customer service supervisor and volunteer coordinator. “It’s an excellent opportunity to help strengthen the ties between WBUR and the rest of the BU community. The experience is a rewarding one and also a good resume builder for students.”

On-air fundraiser volunteers enter phoned-in pledges into a user-friendly customized computer application. In appreciation, the station provides catered meals from such local restaurants as Mississippi’s and Maggiano’s Little Italy.

This pledge drive marks the debut of the station’s volunteer recruiting contest, which rewards volunteers who bring in the most additional volunteers. The winner will receive a prize package that includes WBUR-branded items.

The station, located at 890 Commonwealth Ave., pays for volunteers’ parking. For those taking the T, WBUR is on the B branch of the MTBA’s Green Line, at the St. Paul stop on West Campus.
