In an unprecedented move, the New Mexico-based Lannan Foundation has created “An Especially Notable Book Award” specifically to recognize The New American Militarism: How Americans are Seduced by War, the recent book by professor of International Relations Andrew J. Bacevich. The award is part of the 2005 Lannan Literary Awards and Fellowships, celebrating excellence in poetry, fiction, and nonfiction.

“After reading The New American Militarism, the Foundation felt Professor Bacevich was worthy of a special acknowledgement,” said Jo Chapman, literary program officer for the Lannan Foundation. “We wanted to name it the ‘Read This Now Book Award’ because his book is so potent and clear in terms of writing and importance.”

Candidates for the awards and fellowships are recommended to the Foundation by a network of writers, literary scholars, publishers, and editors. The winners are chosen by the Foundation’s literary committee.

A graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, Bacevich holds a Ph.D. in American Diplomatic History from Princeton University. His books include American Empire: The Realities and Consequences of U.S. Diplomacy and The Imperial Tense: Problems and Prospects of American Empire. His essays and reviews have appeared in a variety of scholarly and general interest publications including The Wilson Quarterly, The National Interest, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, The Nation, The American Conservative, and The New Republic.

The Lannan Foundation was founded in 1960 by the late entrepreneur Patrick Lannan, Sr. The Lannan Literary Awards and Fellowships were established in 1989 to honor both established and emerging writers whose work is of exceptional quality. Over 17 years, Lannan Foundation, through its Awards and Fellowships program, has awarded 153 writers and poets over $11 million. The awards recognize writers of distinctive literary merit who demonstrate potential for continued outstanding work.
