NCAA Presents! Hoops, from Swoopes to Summit: Historical Figures in Professional Women’s Basketball

Opening Reception, Tuesday, November 18, 6-7:30pm

Please join us for the opening reception of the ANNEX installation by Boston-based artist collective NCAA (New Craft Artists in Action), Hoops, from Swoopes to Summit: Historical Figures in Professional Women’s Basketball. Inspired by the current BUAG exhibition, Craft & Modernity, NCAA presents a selection of their hand-knit basketball hoops, alongside ephemera that celebrates the rich, but often overlooked, history of professional women basketball players.

About the NCAA: New Craft Artists in Action is a flexible, inclusive collective made up largely of women or feminist artists based in the Boston area. The NCAA is well-known by its project Net Works for which participants craft hand-made basketball nets to install on empty urban hoops. Of the core collective players, each has her own independent craft, art, or education-based career from which a diverse array of skills are also employed for NCAA collaborative projects. Such efforts typically address histories and practices surrounding craft and athletics, their historical narratives, aesthetic evolution, and social implications within 20th-century society. In an age of consumer-spectatorship, they aim to call attention to spatial and societal neglect and inequity while empowering a new generation of creative participants.
