Director, Photonics Center
Boston University
Dr. Thomas Bifano directs the Boston University Photonics Center (BUPC), a premier academic and industry research hub for innovation in photonic systems. BUPC is comprised of fifty faculty members from academic Departments in science, engineering, and medicine, with active programs for education, scholarly research and development of advanced photonic device prototypes for commercial and military applications. Dr. Bifano also serves as a Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and was Chair of the Manufacturing Engineering Department from 1999-2006. He earned BS (1980) and MS (1983) degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science from Duke University, and a PhD (1988) in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina State University. His research focuses on design and manufacturing of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) for optical applications. He was awarded the international Bepi Columbo Prize in 2009 for his achievements in research, education, and technology development related to deformable mirror development and space science. His laboratory develops wavefront control technology used in high-resolution telescopes, microscopes, and bioimaging systems.
