Maria (Mia) Ong, PhD
Senior Research Scientist and Interim Director of the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Technical Education Research Centers, Inc.

Dr. Mia Ong is a Senior Research Scientist and Evaluator in the Education Research Collaborative at the Technical Education Research Centers, Inc. (TERC), a science and mathematics education organization in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She is also TERC’s Interim Director of the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Presently, Dr. Ong co-leads two NSF-sponsored research studies on women of color in engineering and computer science. Additionally, she has evaluated several STEM diversity/inclusion programs in higher education. She has served on several national advisory committees, including the Center for Gender Equity in Science and Technology and the Social Science Advisory Board for the National Center for Women in Information Technology, which she currently chairs. Dr. Ong has given over 70 presentations on race, gender, and equity in STEM, including a 2015 lightning talk at the Roundtable on Inclusive STEM Education at the White House. Her work has appeared in reports to U.S. Congress and to the U.S. Supreme Court, as well as in journals such as Social Problems, Harvard Educational Review, and the Journal of Research in Science Teaching.
