ARROWS Annual Lecture | Community Events

The ARROWS Lecture recognizes individuals with extraordinary records of leadership and vision in addressing issues facing women in STEM fields. The Lecture is an open forum to raise awareness about gender equity issues for women in STEM at Boston University.

2023 ARROWS Lecture – Prof. Molly Shoichet

On April 28, 2023, Prof. Molly Shoichet, the Michael E Charles Professor in Chemical Engineering and University Professor at the University of Toronto, discussed the trajectory of her career, the groundbreaking research being conducted in her lab, her work as an inventor and an entrepreneur, and how science can be communicated to the public.

2019 ARROWS Lecture – Dr. Evelynn Hammonds

On April 22, 2019, Prof. Evelynn Hammonds, a Professor of the History of Science and Professor of African and African American Studies at Harvard University talked about how we need to be better readers of history of American science, and how we must recognize how deep and pervasive past practices of exclusion are in order to achieve our goal of equity in scientific and engineering fields.

2017 ARROWS Lecture – Dr. Julie Chen

The 2017 ARROWS Lecture was given on May 4, 2017 by Dr. Julie Chen, who oversees a $70M+ research and commercialization enterprise as the Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation at UMass Lowell. From this perspective, Dr. Chen talked about how ‘research is a team sport’ and how increasing the number of women in STEM helps build a championship team.

2016 ARROWS Lecture – Dr. Kristin Rauschenbach

Dr. Kristin Rauschenbach, Principal Consultant at Notchway Solutions, LLC was the featured speaker at the 2nd ARROWS Annual Lecture, given on March 16, 2016. In her talk, Dr. Rauschenbach discussed her 30-year scientific career, which has included executive leadership and scientific research in government, commercial and academic sectors.


2014 ARROWS Lecture – Dr. Kathryn Uhrich

The first ARROWS Lecture was given by Dr. Kathryn Uhrich, Professor of Chemistry and Dean of Mathematical and Physical Sciences at Rutgers University, on November 14, 2014. In her talk, Dr. Uhrich discussed her career in academia, pharmaceutical polymer research, entrepreneurship, and the issues women face in invention and innovation.
