Each year, <a id=\"OWAd3cc4431-2147-963e-151a-d19c958ce700\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ciss\/ciss-pilot-grants\/\" data-linkindex=\"1\" title=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ciss\/ciss-pilot-grants\/\">CISS invites proposals<\/a>\u00a0for such research projects.\u00a0 Learn more about the recipients and their projects below.<\/b><\/div>\n<div><b><img id=\"x_image_0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ciss\/files\/2026\/03\/Wade-Campbell-0085-1.jpg\" data-imagetype=\"External\" \/>Wade Campbell (CAS Anthropology &amp; Archaeology)<\/b><\/div>\n<div><b><a id=\"OWA9d4d9306-881a-b162-2409-6108e68ee36c\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/archaeology\/profile\/wade-campbell\/\" data-linkindex=\"2\" title=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/archaeology\/profile\/wade-campbell\/\">Wade Campbell<\/a>\u00a0is a Din\u00e9 (Navajo) historical archaeologist and assistant professor in the <a id=\"OWAfd706328-39f4-d5dd-8d98-9a8647a54edb\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/archaeology\/\" data-linkindex=\"3\" title=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/archaeology\/\">Archaeology Program<\/a>\u00a0whose research examines the relationships between Din\u00e9 communities and other local groups in the U.S. Southwest from the 17th century to the present day, including the Pueblos, Spanish, and Americans. Wade is engaged with a range of questions related to longer-term patterns of Navajo settlement and economic activity across the greater Four Corners region, with a particular focus on incipient Indigenous pastoralism and related shifts in land-use, social organization, &amp; diet\/subsistence practices.<\/b><\/div>\n<div><b>Project: \u201cEarly Navajo equids pilot project [ENEq]\u201d<\/b><\/div>\n<div><b>Following their reintroduction to the U.S. Southwest in the 16th century, \u0141\u012f\u0301\u012f\u0301 (horse) became the quintessential companion animal in Din\u00e9 (Navajo) culture. By the early 1800s, horses and other equids (i.e., donkeys; mules) had become key indicators of wealth and status in Din\u00e9 society, as well as integrals part of the highly mobile, sheep-based pastoral system that allowed the Din\u00e9 to resist Euro-American colonialism for over 300 years.
