To examine this association among urban<br \/>\n  youth\u2014a group with a high prevalence of sexual risk behaviors\u2014researchers<br \/>\n  surveyed 1034 African American and Hispanic students from<br \/>\n  Brooklyn. Subjects completed questionnaires in the 7th<br \/>\n  grade and then again in the 10th grade. Analyses were<br \/>\n  adjusted for some potential confounders (e.g., age, ethnicity,<br \/>\n  early sexual initiation).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In<br \/>\n  the 7th grade, approximately 25% of students reported<br \/>\n  ever drinking alcohol; 9% reported drinking in the past<br \/>\n  month.  <\/li>\n<li>In<br \/>\n  the 10th grade, prevalence of use greatly increased:<br \/>\n  63% reported ever drinking alcohol and 29% reported<br \/>\n  drinking in the past month. <\/li>\n<li>Students<br \/>\n  who had drunk in the 7th grade (versus those who had<br \/>\n  abstained) were more likely in the 10th grade to report<br \/>\n  alcohol use, binge drinking, drunkenness, and having<br \/>\n  an alcohol or drug problem. <\/li>\n<li>They<br \/>\n  were also more likely to report a greater number of<br \/>\n  sexual partners, unprotected sex, pregnancy, and being<br \/>\n  drunk or high during sex. Female students who had drunk<br \/>\n  during the 7th grade were also more likely in the 10th<br \/>\n  grade to report having had sex. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- InstanceEndEditable --><\/p>\n<div class=\"research-summary-footnotes-1\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<!-- InstanceBeginEditable name=\"footnotes-1\" --><!-- InstanceEndEditable -->\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"research-summary-comments\">Comments:<\/h2>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<!-- InstanceBeginEditable name=\"comments\" -->  <\/p>\n<p>Although<br \/>\n  analyses were not adjusted for psychosocial risk factors,<br \/>\n  the results confirm the dangers of early alcohol use.<br \/>\n  The high prevalence of drinking in 7th graders suggests<br \/>\n  that screening and prevention programs must begin well<br \/>\n  before the teenage years.
