To examine<br \/>\n  the association between exceeding drinking limits and<br \/>\n  alcohol abuse and dependence (which include a range of<br \/>\n  health consequences), researchers analyzed data from a<br \/>\n  nationally representative sample of 26,946 adult drinkers.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Approximately<br \/>\n  37% of subjects who exceeded daily limits about once<br \/>\n  per week had current alcohol dependence and\/or abuse.\n  <\/li>\n<li>\n  As the frequency of exceeding<br \/>\n  daily limits increased, the prevalence of dependence<br \/>\n  increased (from 0.4% among those who never exceeded<br \/>\n  daily limits to 41% among those who exceeded these limits<br \/>\n  daily or almost daily). <\/li>\n<li>\n  Exceeding weekly limits<br \/>\n  significantly increased the prevalence of dependence<br \/>\n  among <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<li>drinkers<br \/>\n  who never exceeded daily limits (2% of those who exceeded<br \/>\n  weekly but not daily limits versus 0.3% of those who<br \/>\n  exceeded neither limit); <\/li>\n<li>drinkers<br \/>\n  who exceeded daily limits &gt;=2 times per month (e.g.,<br \/>\n  27% of those who exceeded weekly plus daily limits<br \/>\n  twice per week versus 9% of those who exceeded the<br \/>\n  daily, but not the weekly, limits).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- InstanceEndEditable --><\/p>\n<div class=\"research-summary-footnotes-1\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<!-- InstanceBeginEditable name=\"footnotes-1\" --><!-- InstanceEndEditable -->\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"research-summary-comments\">Comments:<\/h2>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<!-- InstanceBeginEditable name=\"comments\" -->  <\/p>\n<p>The<br \/>\n  more frequently one exceeds daily drinking limits, the<br \/>\n  greater the risk of consequences. However, recommended<br \/>\n  drinking limits\u2014like other measures in medicine (e.g.,<br \/>\n  blood pressure)\u2014do not provide a clear threshold above<br \/>\n  which health consequences will develop.
