Deion Hawkins

Assistant Professor of Argumentation & Advocacy, Director of Debate, Emerson College

Deion S. Hawkins, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Argumentation & Advocacy and the Director of Debate at Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Hawkins is a critical health communication scholar whose research analyzes the intersections of race, communication, culture, and health. Therefore, he frequently uses trauma-informed interviewing techniques to unpack health disparities that continue to disproportionately impact BIPOC communities. His previous work has largely centered on HIV advocacy and racial justice in policing; examples of his peer-reviewed research can be found in Rhetoric of Health & Medicine, American Behavioral Scientist, and Health Communication. Yahoo!, Salon, and Fortune have also featured his writing. Outside of research and teaching, Dr. Hawkins is also a nationally recognized debate and public speaking coach, yielding over 100 awards in his career. 

  Lastly, Deion is passionate about serving and advocating alongside the most marginalized and under-resourced. Therefore, he currently serves on the board for Boston Healthcare For The Homeless Program, a nonprofit dedicated to ensuring comprehensive and dignified healthcare for the unhoused.
